What is reflexology?  reflex3.jpg

Foot Reflexology is an ancient practice based on the theory that every organ and structure in the body is represented by a particular area of the foot. Using specific massage techniques on these areas can bring about changes to the corresponding part of the body.
The technique has obvious similarities with acupressure and, indeed, the origins of reflexology can be traced back to ancient Egypt and to Thai, Indian and Chinese medical cultures of some 2000 years ago.

How can reflexology help?

Used regularly reflexology is particularly effective in stimulating and supporting the systems of the body such as the digestive or immune system and it will enhance any other treatments you are receiving by keeping the circulation and lymph systems active. This in turn assists with relieving pain, boosting energy levels and helping to remove toxins. The body’s natural healing powers are stimulated and a sense of well-being is promoted. It will not fix problems such as broken bones or hernias but as a complementary therapy there are a variety of conditions that reflexology can effectively treat, such as:

  • Allergies and sinus conditions
  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Female conditions including PMT and menopause
  • Headaches and migraine
  • IBS and other digestive disorders
  • Skin problems including eczema and psoriasis
  • Sleeping disorders

In other words, treat the feet to heal the body!
Aside from the healing benefits, it can be extremely relaxing too! With today’s hectic lifestyles and rising stress levels it is easy to let the strain of everyday life get the better of you and therefore important to look at ways of reducing and controlling stress, leading to improved health and quality of life. It is believed that 75% of our health problems can be linked to nervous stress and tension. Reflexology is a deeply relaxing treatment and as such is excellent for reducing stress, anxiety, tension and pain.

On your first visit a detailed case history will be taken, with questions about lifestyle and  general health. This can take up to 15 minutes and so the initial visit is usually booked for that much longer. To save time and therefore reduce your costs please click here to download the Case History Form and post/email to Back2toes prior to your visit.

At the clinic each reflexology treatment lasts from 30 minutes to one hour and usually about six weekly sessions are recommended for optimum results. It is a non-invasive therapy and so you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks only, in order for the feet to be treated. The treatment will involve “pressure-walking” with the fingers as well as deep massage techniques. Do not worry if you have ticklish feet as the treatment is very precise and quite firm.

There may be a dramatic reaction to the treatment such as drowsiness, strong emotion, increased bowel movement, flu-type symptoms or skin problems. This is a healthy sign that harmful toxins have been released and is called the “healing response”. It is important to drink plenty of water following the session.

Can everybody have reflexology?

Since reflexology treats the whole person and not just their symptoms, most people will benefit from it. However there are a few conditions which may mean treatment cannot go ahead or a doctor’s referral may be required. For instance if you have a verucca or are pregnant. It is important therefore that you submit the completed Case History Form prior to your appointment in order to highlight any issues.
